One day he was called to treat a patient suffering from typhoid fever. After having seen the patient, Dr Ts'ao returned home. Minutes later, the patient's wife ran into the doctor's residence and asked if he had taken the fifty dollars by the patient's pillow, by mistake. Dr Ts'ao said, "yes", and returned the money. Later, after the patient had recovered, his wife found the fifty dollars among the sheets. Realising then that the doctor had not taken the money, they returned the money to Dr Ts'ao and were curious to know why he admitted to taking the money. The doctor explained that since the loss of the money had led to suspicion, even about their own physician,it had indicated to him how important the money was to them. If he did not admit to it, and they could not find the money, it might have caused too much emotional upset in the patient. In turn his illness might have gotten worse, which might have proved fatal.
