Treatments

As a physical process, acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into body tissue. This local stimulus leads (via various debated pathways), to reactions in many other regions/systems of the body.

Combinations then, of different points, simultaneously, can 'reinforce' (tonify), or 'reduce' ( relax or sedate) what is called the body's 'Qi' ( basic vitality).

Treatment is engaged in to: strengthen, relax, harmonise, detoxify, sweat, warm, nourish, spread, cool or destagnate the Qi and other body energies, fluids and essences, as is appropriate to a given person's condition.

In terms of T.C.M., the goal is to balance 'Yin' and 'Yang' qualities of the body. In modern terminology, the aim is to reestablish 'homeostasis'.

At the risk of generalising, needles are used to regulate the Qi; moxibustion (a dried herbal mix) is burned to warm, relax and open pathways; inspiration (suction) cups are applied to relieve spasms, draw out chills and instill a srtrong local stimulus.

Attention is paid to diet, a very individual thing, to ensure it is appropriate to the person's constitution, digestive capacity, climate, occupation, life phase and that the food is relatively in accord with the season its being eaten in.
