The very
similarity suggests that when one is in control
of the actual breath, and as such, one has the
ability to potently alter the state of the
nervous system, mind and body.
Certainly both
are devoted to a 'breath control' process; one
involving combustion-inhalation; the other,
simply in-taking the energy existing within the
air we breathe - 'prana'. Both are regarded as
mechanisms used to facilitate stress reduction
and nervous system relaxation.
So, try an
effective approach to Stress
Reduction:-
The very next
time there is a gap between packs of cigarettes
or gaps between each cigarette smoked, try your
hand, (after all, you have been practicing for
years!), at the 'other' science of breath
control - breathing deeply and intently, sans
cigarette.
I mean, simply
take the cigarette out of the hand of your
everyday smoker, instruct them to go through the
usual motions of smoking, and you have an
everyday 'yogi', engaged in attaining an
'altered state'. That is, breathing deeply and
intently, engaging the breath and accentuating
the out-breath. We could name this 'urban yoga'.
Get into it!
