Nature of Qi l Yin and Yang l Emotions l Stress l Obstruction - Pain

INTRODUCTION

Thoroughly intrinsic to any discourse on acupuncture, is a close inspection of exactly what it is that the treatment modality effects and how this occurs. This, then involves a scrutiny of the phenomenon called 'qi'.

Qi, is said to be intrinsic to being alive in a body.

"Some nonmedical authors……described the origin of human beings. Zhuang Zi (Chuang Tzu) another ancient daoist, wrote:

"The birth of the human being amounts to an accumulation of qi. When it has accumulated, birth takes place, and when it has dissipated, death takes place." Later the philosopher-scientist Wang Cong would write:

"As water turns into ice, so qi crystallizes to form the human body."…….

In this perspective, qi ………..is the precursor of everything in nature, including human beings……….Qi is the medium by which one thing reflects another, because it is the ocean of being from which all arises and returns."

This is not a linear concept and is at first glance, paradoxical.

My version:

Qi appears as a 'chameleonic substrate' as it were, an undifferentiated phenomenon, embedded into the very fabric of living processes.

Qi is 'signals' being expressed through an unlimited array of 'channels,' information in constant flux. It is the groundswell to the 'flow of events' and the very 'nature of things'.

The western counterpart - 'energy' - lacks the multi-dimensional qualities of Qi and becomes very easily a tool used to quantify aspects of function, dysfunction and healing, thus missing the implicit importance of gauging, rather, the relationships between things.
